Golden Gate Bridge

A Thirty-Five Million Dollar Steel Harp
For nearly a hundred years before its construction, cities and officials of San Francisco dreamed of a bridge to reach Marin County across the strait. They finally got their wish in 1934, when the task fell to Chief Engineer Joseph B. Strauss to see it done.

The Golden Gate Bridge was not only a marvel of size and engineering, but also an innovation in safety. It was the first bridge construction to employ hard hats, based on E.W. Bullard’s World War I styled caps. A safety net suspended end-to-end under the construction site saved 19 men, known as the “Halfway to Hell Club.”

The four year construction cost a modest 11 lives, ten of which fell in a section of scaffold on February 17th, ending their record as the safest construction project to date.

Over two million vehicles have traversed the 4,200 foot bridge since it opened in 1937. It spans the Golden Gate—a strait of water connecting the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific. Although it lost its status as the longest suspension bridge in the world in 1964, San Francisco’s famous rolling fog and the dazzling views from Marin’s Vista Point at the north end have kept it one of the most photographed icons of California.

On its inauguration in May, 1937, the San Francisco Chronicle described the bridge as a “thirty-five million dollar steel harp!” Joseph Strauss wrote a poem entitled The Mighty Task is Done, in which he said these words about the modern wonder:

“At last the mighty task is done;
Resplendent in the western sun
The Bridge looms mountain high;
Its titan piers grip ocean floor,
Its great steel arms link shore with shore,
Its towers pierce the sky.”
